View Full Version : Brett Lee to become an All Rounder?

I don't know if any one's noticed but Brett Lee's batting has improved heaps lately. He says he's aiming to become a bowling all rounder. The mark of a true all rounder is a batting average of at least 30 and a bowling average of less. But I guess for Brett to be a bowling all rounder, he needs to get his batting average up to about 25. I think he could do this and I even think that (This'll probably only happen if he gets used as a night watchman and then bats like hell) he is capable of a test century!
What do you guys reckon?

Lots have people have been saying this since the Ashes and i'm all for it. I hope he does get the All-Rounder status. I think he missed his time to shine though in the Aussies 1st innings in the 3 test against South Africa. Had he made 30+ runs it might have helped his case a bit. But hey, what about Warney?

I reckon Warney will finally get a century before he retires. At the moment he holds the world record for the most runs without scoring a test century. But for Warney to become an all rounder he needs to work on consistent solid batting. He's gotten out for too many ducks but that's something he will work on:p

Warney definatly wasn't out on 99 but theres nothing you can do about it, no where in the record books does it have anywhere for people that "should have been"
As for Brett Lee I'm not sure if they'll give him an all rounder rank, who really cares tho? if he doesn't get it, it won't make him any worse of a batsman. He can swing pretty hard tho an I don't know about improving, I've always thought he was pretty good. I was at the match in sydney 2 years ago when he hit the 6 off the second last ball to win the game (well it didn't WIN it for us, we needed 1 run off the last ball then). He's probably better with the bat then warne, at least he can play a block shot an keep the ball on the ground.
Person I think that has improved the most is Pigeon, for a number 12 to bat out a 100 partnership is pretty impressive even if he didn't face to many balls. He's also got a 50 under his belt now and even hit a 6 of his own.

Brett Lee for me is already an All Rounder. Just look what he did in the ashes Series. He can be used as a Knight Watchmen, but i Like him batting in the tail. Great Entertainment.

Hey i just had a brain wave and remember that Shane Warne is already an all rounder apparently. He had the little image of a bat and ball next to his name in the 3rd test against RSA.

Just because Nine decide to put a bat next to his name, it doesnt mean hes an allrounder. Shane Warne's batting plays NO part in the selection of the team, so hes a bowler. Much like Lee.

They Dont just put a bat next to his Name for No reason. They have Smart cricketing wisdom(blokes at 9) so they Wouldnt Just put it their for nothing.
I think Lee is an Allrounder but has Some improvment. i think the Tailenders are good batters.... Even Mcgrath, hes a great defendsive player.

I don;t know. That decision is as bad as the one that stopped Punter of getting a ton on debut.

I was there at the Gabba on the day he got his 50. That was one of the best moments I've ever seen. There were people around me crying.

The bat doesnt mean "allrounder" though - it just means they have some batting ability. Warne is not an allrounder by any stretch of the imagination, and neither is Lee.
Lee has the potential to achieve it if he keeps working on his batting, however.

This is a debate that actually rages across many established cricket forums between highly respected cricket posters, so you cant just say Im an idiot for disagreeing with you.
An allrounder is someone who has two disciplines impact on the selection of the team. If Warne couldnt bat, the team would be exactly the same, so he is not an allrounder. Same goes for Lee.

No, that would be Justin Langer, followed by Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden.
Either way, one series doesnt make a career. He averages 16.65 for crying out loud. If hes a test allrounder, so is James Franklin.
It really doesnt matter how many runs he scores. It matters what the selectors do. If Warne couldnt bat at all, the team would be exactly the same. Hence, his batting is not playing a part in selection, and hence, hes not an allrounder.

I was at that game aswell except I had to catch the last train that could get back to newcastle, so I heard it all on radio and unfortuanatly for me, my brother and my dad the ball was hit exactly where we were sitting :(.

yes yes, a typo :p thanks for pointing it out for the rest of the world to laugh :o he he he
As for the all rounder debate there are points to both sides. As for the bat being next to warnes name, that means nothing really. Could put me in the side and have a bat, ball an wickets next to my name but I'd still suck at all of them ;)
Like has been said Warne has a low Avg an is the second lowest on ducks only surpassed by McGrath and statiscially speaking McGrath isn't to far off Warne in batting standards. He is specifically in the team for bowling, an all rounder is someone there to bat an bowl.
Then again from another point of view you can get a bowling allrounder or a batting allrounder. Symonds is ment to be a batting allrounder same as Bevan in his day, might be able to consider Lee as a bowling allrounder once he picks up his game.
In the end I believe its just pointless titles which mean nothing to skill levels.
also to novacastrian_panther, alot of people left early, it was teaming down with rain that day and alot of people assumed it would be called off. We would have totally smashed them that game apart from the ducksworth system which needs some revising I think.

Hussey's as good a bowler as Shane Warne is a batsman, IMO.
Anyway, regardless of what Channel Nine happen to say, an allrounder is someone who has two disciplines that impact on selection. If Warne couldnt bat, the side would be exactly the same. His batting is never taken into consideration.

Indeed. A bowling allrounder is someone who is selected on their bowling alone, but who's batting influences the selection of other players based on the balance. Warne and Lee dont fit this requirement, either.

Justin Langer 394

Michael Clarke 355
Matthew Hayden 318
Shane Warne 249
Simon Katich 248
Adam Gilchrist 181
Damien Martyn 178
Brett Lee 158
Jason Gillespie 47
Michael Kasprowicz 44
Glenn McGrath 36
Shaun Tait 8
He had a good series with the bat, averaging 27. But one decent series doesnt make you an allrounder, especially when you average just over 16 in your career.
