Footballer's punch breaks girl's nose
By Josh Massoud
May 23, 2006
A SHARKS first grade rugby league player broke a teenage girl's nose when he punched her in the face yesterday, just hours after a match against the Bulldogs had passed off peacefully.
Sharks utility Tevita Latu knocked 19-year-old Brooke Peninton down, causing her to hit the ground head first.
A fight then broke out, with a Bulldogs player who was with the girl rushing in to restrain the New Zealand-born player.
Sporting a broken nose, two black eyes, a swollen lip and bruised mouth, Ms Peninton told how the attack happened outside Cronulla's Kingsway BP service station at about 3am.
She said the assault, witnessed by about a dozen people, occurred after Latu began throwing corn chips at her.
"I told him to grow up, but then he threw half the bag at me and started throwing dirt and bark as well. I got up and pushed him away."
It was then Latu snapped.
"He punched me in the face as hard as he could. He didn't care that I was a girl," Ms Peninton said. "I fell back and hit my head on the concrete. When I put my hand to my face there was blood everywhere."
As the NRL went into damage control last night, a witness who asked not to be named, said: "I've never seen a guy hit another guy like that, let alone a girl. It was disgusting."
Advertisement:
Ms Peninton somehow confronted the footballer and demanded he look at her facial injuries.
"He said, 'I can't, I've got a mother and sisters, I just can't'.
"I replied, 'How would you like someone to do this to them?'
"He then looked up and apologised. I said 'It's going to take a lot more than sorry'."
Ms Peninton met Latu while partying with friends from both the Bulldogs and Sharks in Cronulla on Sunday night.
After the final nightspot closed, the group went to the BP for a snack.
The teenager, from Forster on the mid-North Coast, said Latu drank several bourbon and cokes, but "knew what he was doing when he hit me".
The unnamed Bulldogs player and a girlfriend escorted Ms Peninton to Sutherland Hospital, where X-rays revealed she had sustained a broken nose.
Latu has been stood down from first grade pending an investigation, which is expected to result in his two-year deal being terminated. Ms Peninton is yet to decide whether to press charges.
"Hitting a girl or a young woman is unacceptable. It doesn't get much worse," concerned Sharks CEO Greg Pierce said.
NRL chief executive David Gallop lamented the incident saying: "It's a very serious matter and we will be expecting a swift report from the club."

Somehow i dont think that will help his cause, i think his best option is not to deny to much, just appologise say he has learnt his lesson, pay the fine and hope for the best, no need to carry on and say he isnt guilty, because if he is proven guilty in court then the situation for him will be worse than it would be if he just came out and appologised

I'm just stunned, I know him very well and he isn't that kind bloke. If he's guitly, then he should cop the punishment, but the problem with sacking players is that Canberra pick them up straight away. Therefore nulifying the punishment.
And as for the Sharks, Tony Caine is a good young hooker, he'l do well. We aren't a one man team anymore.

It doesn't matter what side of the story you hear, he punched a girl ffs. There's no reason to hit a girl even if she pushes you or hits you.

NRL player Latu admits punching woman
Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 4:53 PM
Cronulla hooker Tevita Latu could be banned from rugby league for years after he admitted to his NRL club that he punched a teenaged woman in the face.
Latu was charged on Tuesday with assault after allegedly breaking the 19-year-old's nose.
If the Sharks terminate his two-year contract, it is understood the NRL will refuse to re-register him and so prevent another club from signing him.
When asked whether Latu's contract was under threat, Cronulla chief executive Greg Pierce said: "I dare say it is."
Latu, 24, has been suspended by the club while it conducts its own inquiry.
NRL chief executive David Gallop said the league would await the outcome of Cronulla's investigation.
"After that we will determine what further investigations and action will be taken by the league," Gallop said.
As the NRL is particularly sensitive about its players' treatment of women, Latu is likely to be put out of the game for a lengthy period.
Pierce has spoken with Latu and the woman, Brooke Peninton.
Peninton claims Latu punched her in the face outside a service station in Cronulla at around 3.30am Monday.
"He told me pretty much exactly the same story," Pierce said.
Pierce will speak to more witnesses and the police before deciding what action to take against Latu whose contract expires at the end of next year.
The incident occurred several hours after the New Zealand international played in the Sharks' loss to the Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium.
Pierce said Cronulla would pay Peninton's medical expenses and any costs incurred from being off work.
He said he was angered by the second embarrassing public incident involving Sharks players this month.
"I just shook my head. I was very disappointed, very frustrated, a bit cranky, a bit angry," Pierce said.
"I didn't get to speak to him until today. I'd calmed down a bit, so I didn't really take it out on him.
"But he didn't need to be told, he's aware of it anyway - he was upset and remorseful. But I didn't sugar coat it."
Latu's incident comes three weeks after forwards Darren Mapp and Luke Harlen were fined for drunken behaviour in a Circular Quay hotel.
But Pierce was sure there wasn't a growing culture of anti-social behaviour at the club.
"I don't think there is. This wasn't a club thing, it was an individual player and there weren't any other players there," he said.
"We've had a couple of incidents this year, but not had anything in previous years. They're good people at the club."
Gallop was concerned police have again been called to an incident involving a rugby league player.
"It's a very alarming situation and we are very concerned about it," he said.
Latu joined Cronulla from the NZ Warriors this season and had been out drinking following Sunday's game.
Pierce said he would speak with senior players and management about the prospect of a curfew or alcohol restrictions, which he admitted would be hard to impose.
Peninton told police she was punched once in the face after she and Latu became involved in an altercation while talking outside the BP service station in Kingsway.
She fell to the ground and was helped up and taken to Sutherland hospital by a friend and an unnamed Bulldogs player.
Latu was arrested at his Miranda home at 11.30pm on Monday night and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was granted police bail to face Sutherland Local Court on June 15.

H is absolute scum. His contract should be terminated he should be fined at least $10,000. The NRL should impose a 10 year ban and he should be refused to be re-regestered after that period. I applaude Sharks though they have already provided specialists for any medical treatment she needs. If they havt already they also should provide psycoligy for her and her family if needed

Are we no longer allowed to use any slang whatsoever on this forum, in the chance that it may offend. I think that is one of the main problems, which stereotypically runs through all of your support base. We were discussing El Masri the other day, re his performance, and got hounded, (oh jeez pardon the dog pun again), because we shouldn't be talking about him with his background. The mere fact that he is Lebanese had nothing to do with how he was playing or how we were discussing him, but because he is, one of your fellow fans wanted to play the racism card.
Attention fellow forumers, these terms are now considered derogitory and can as such no longer be used.
every dog has its day; go to pot (the dogs); hair of the dog; hot dog; in the doghouse; let sleeping dogs lie; put on the dog; rain cats and dogs; see a man about a dog; shaggy dog story; sick as a dog; tail wagging the dog; teach an old dog new tricks; throw to the wolves (dogs); top banana (dog).
