The White Stripes' album Elephant got me into everything i like now. Had it not been for that album who knows what crap i'd be listening to.

I'm not sure about bands that are still around, but the songs that got me into older artists were usually covered by the bands i like. So i'm going to put the original song, artist and band that covered it.
War Pigs - Black Sabbath - Dresden Dolls
Lovesick - Bob Dylan - The White Stripes
Death Letter - Son House - The White Strips
The Man Who Sold the World - David Bowie - Nirvana

There are more but are mostly White Stripes covers of blues artists which i have really gotten into.

The White Stripes saved me lol.
