i owned a ps2 for about two years than i encounted a problem that i have been unable the fix, so i went out and bought a xbox.and now i will need the machine to play rugby league 2
the machine makes really loud jerking noises for about 2 minutes and always freezers or just doesant load( sounds like something is stuck)
i can sometimes get the machine to work by standing the machine upright and shaking the top of it but this only works sometimes.
i am just wondering if any one has had the same problem and does anyone no how to fix it or wat the problem is
i rang up the ps2 helpline and they said vacume it out and if that does not work than send it away. i refuse to send it away simply because it will cost $200 which i could almost buy a new machine with

I had a problem similar to that. It sounds like the laser is probably out of alignment or needs to have the voltage adjusted, as I assume you've attempted to take your PS2 apart and clean the interior (note: if you haven't let me know and I'll give you a link tyo a guide that will take you through the process of doing this). Forget about trying to fix this yourself, its damn near impossible.
I'll explain why you get that clicking/squeaking sound. Thats the optic laser trying to read a piece of data on the disc, but can't do it correctly, so it will move back and forth on that part of the disc until it can read it correctly. This will often result in some nasty scratches on your games, I can tell you this from experience.
Now, are you getting clicking/buzzing sounds when you play any game or just a few of your games? Because the laser moving back and forth can also be caused by warped discs, so check to see if your games aren't warped.
You should be able find a local computer store that can fix it for you. I can't tell you how much it will cost though, because I haven't asked my local place.

If you're just cleaning it, there's pretty much no chance of you stuffing it up more, unless you are totally careless and neglegant. Removing the outer shell and the optic lens cover is actually pretty simple. Use a guide like this one (http://faqs.ign.com/articles/390/390535p1.html) to take you through the process. Don't just open up your machine and start going nuts.
But if you just take two minutes to search from Google, you'll find one. All you need are two phillips head screwdrivers (one needs to a #0 phillips head) and some kind of cleaning alocohol for the lens. A pen and paper is necessary as well, as the screws need to be put back in the right place or you'll pierce a circuit board or something.
It might sound complex, but its actually quite easy.

Yes. If its considerably loud, its probably the little slide tracks that the laser sits on that also needs cleaning (it hard to explain if you haven't seen it) and might also need a little dab of oil.

Mine was pretty much broken at one point and it wouldn't read any discs at all. So I just took the top off, repositioned the laser to where it starts off and it was fine from there on. It takes no genius to fix it, I can tell you that :D
