If Rugby League were to cut down from 13 to 12 men aside which position would you eliminiate.

I'd probably have to eliminate either two players or none at all and I'd have to say that they would be either props or second rowers because if I've got one critiscism of league it's that league has become a game of pure power so if there were fewer forwards there'd be more smart play involving the backs and less running at the line with your head down trying to punch a hole in it. However, if there were more backs numbers 3+4 would probs be replaced by second rowers (as the team with the stronger pack usually wins the game) which wouldn't improve anything.

i wouldn't like this to happen but if I had to eliminate any position it would be stand-off because anyone who can play there can play scrum-half or the other way around.

All postions in league are usefull its union who needs to get rid of some.

the lock usually goes because they dont push in the scrums and they need a full backline to defend

though locks do play a major role when they break from the scrum providing an extra player in the back line.... though to look at the problem realistically, you wouldn't be able to cut one of the positions that has two players (centres, props, second row, wing)
this leaves:
Hooker
Lock
5/8
Half
Fullback
from this list i would have to conceed that the lock would be the first one to cut. You can get by with a so-so lock, a so-so player in anyone of those other players and there is a glaring weakpoint in a team.

No1 Eels, you really have no concept on Rugby Union do you.. The only posistions that Ruby union have more of are the Flankers.. TWO..
The backline numbers are the same, Only diff is the 8 in the scrum which the Flankers are needed for the tackling and the extra power in "REAL" scrums, i say this becuase Rugby League scrums are a complete joke,

Yeah players falling on each other making weird noises, i dont like your "real" world. Union scrums are the joke they dont reward the team who forced the mistake they reward whos got a fatter head.

Even though i am a big league fan i would have to agree with Paul. League scrums are a bit weak.

Union Scrums a joke? HA FUNNY!
League Scrums are a disgrace to the word Scrum.
1)Since when do you feed the ball through the props legs...
2)Lets just form the scrum, no pushing please,Dont wanna mess your hair products
3)Half the time the lock ins't even in the scrum, and others are standing up when the scrum forms
4) The only team that contests the scrums are the cowboys on occasions.
5)They actually form with no pushing, No Crouch,Hold, Engage
Scrums are a joke in league, what use are they if they dont even do it properly, Prolly be better if they just play the ball

also in union, a hooker acts like a forward, whereas in league the hooker acts like a scrum half.
hence in union the 9 and 10 r the main playmakers, while in league there is a 6, 7 and 9.
in union there is no second receiver (in league there is 5/8), only a first receiver number 10.

Oh Paul, stop making sense, and stop making valid points will you? You should know that it is absolutely unacceptable to say anything here other than every single facet of Rugby League is better than Rugby Union!
sarcasm. rock on, Paul

You still can't grasp the fact that people like both sports. Less than a tenth of my posts on here are about Rugby Union.
Just when I thought you couldn't get any more clueless...

When a player is sin-binned or sent off, the team normally leaves 5/8th or lock unoccupied because, whilst these positions are important, it is impractical to drop any other position. The props, 2nd rowers, hooker and halfback are required for scrums, and the centres, wingers and fullback have defensive positions which cannot be vacated. You could lose either 5/8th or lock, but the player in the remaining position would need some of the attributes of the player lost. If you lost the 5/8th, you would need a lock in the style of Tawera Nikau, who did a lot of organising and passing while still doing a forwards work, but if you lost the lock, you would need a 5/8th with a larger frame like Brad Fittler or Braith Anasta.

i agree with the person who quoted above me if i had to get rid of a players position it would either be a lock or a 5/8, although 5/8 is my position and is one of the major play makers you still have the halfback, which should be first play maker anyway, a lock is also not needed that much because you think yuo need second row otherwise where does the lock sit and you need front row because if you dont where does the 2nd row sit , and you need a back line for defense out of the scrum. so really the only realistic positions to be cut off are the 5/8 and lock.
